Change is Inevitable, Embrace It

It is an old cliché that “the only thing that stays the same is change.” It may be overused, but only because it is true. While many things may appear unchanging, a closer look reveals otherwise. The trail you walk every day is constantly shifting: new life emerging, older life passing away. Leaves grow and fall, erosion reshapes the earth, temperatures rise and fade. Even you are different from one day to the next. One walk may be peaceful, another restless. No two walks contain the same thoughts, the same breaths, or the same awareness. Life is alive before us, and each moment is unique.

Of course, this mindset, one of freshness, wonder, and gratitude, is not always easy to access.

We marvel at children because they remain immersed in the wonder of life. A child can become enchanted by the sky, a tree, a rock, or even an ant. So why does this sense of exuberance often fade with age? Part of the answer is that, as we grow older, we quickly place names and labels onto the world around us. This is necessary and natural, but it comes with a cost. Once we mentally place things into categories, we stop truly seeing what is before us. Instead of directly experiencing life, we begin interacting more with our mental idea of what the world is supposed to be.

This process is not entirely negative. It is part of maturing. The world becomes more predictable: there are no monsters under the bed, and no supervillains waiting to take over the city at night. But along with that security comes a subtle loss. There are no superheroes. No magic. No Santa Claus. Fewer and fewer surprises….until, sometimes, we see none.

How a Mental Rut Destroys Creative Joy (and How to Escape It)

However, we all know someone who seems to have avoided fully “growing up” in the best possible way. They remain fresh, creative, and enthusiastic. When you are around them, some long-forgotten part of yourself awakens, and suddenly life feels open with possibility again.

This ability to see possibilities and variations is the opposite of being stuck in a rut. Yet living in a rut is the daily reality for many adults. Over time, the mind becomes rigid, sorting people and experiences into familiar categories. When someone in this state sees a tree on the way to work, they no longer truly see the tree itself. They see only their mental concept of a tree: something encountered ten thousand times before, something stripped of mystery, beauty, inspiration, or possibility.

Shifting Your Perspective: Breaking a Mental Rut Through Art

One concrete way to increase your ability to revel in the present is to improve your observation skills. Try putting a leaf, or some other object, before you. With a simple setup of pencil and paper, begin to draw the leaf, but do not look away from the leaf toward your drawing. Instead, draw the leaf with your eyes never leaving its surface. Then, Notice. Notice the shape, then notice it again, and again. Notice its color, you may say: green, but what else do you see?

As an artist myself, this practice has brought countless gifts to my daily life. When I first started painting skin tones, for example, I was shocked and thrilled when I really saw not just the “skintone” but the yellows, purples, turquoises, greens, and blues (and a thousand varieties at that!) all before my eyes.

But I didn’t see this at first. I had to spend time UNSEEING the category of “skin.” We all “know” what color skin is, or the sky, or a leaf. But try really looking, and a whole new world pops out.

And this new, adventurous, colorful, and fresh world bleeds out into your everyday experience of being alive. Your spiritual life blossoms!

See Others With Freshness to Love More Deeply

The same thing can happen in relationships. A person may wake up beside their spouse and no longer truly see them, but instead see a fixed idea of who they believe that person to be. But imagine greeting another person with complete presence, looking into their eyes without the filter of old assumptions or expectations. To truly see another human being is an act of vulnerability and love. People often rise to meet the way they are perceived. When someone feels genuinely seen and heard, they naturally become more open, alive, and authentic in return.

Many otherwise healthy but stagnant relationships could be renewed through this simple shift in awareness: recognizing that people are never static. Everyone is constantly changing, carrying within them untapped possibilities that have not yet emerged. To be truly seen and truly heard is one of the deepest human needs. By meeting others with fresh eyes and attentive presence, we reconnect not only with them, but with life itself. In that space, inspiration, connection, and joy return spontaneously.

Imagine if your boss saw you this way. Would you shrink inward, or would you feel inspired, confident, and free to grow?

See Beyond Appearances

We tend to perceive reality through the lens of our own assumptions and preconceived ideas about what is happening in the present moment.

The tree is a simple example. No two trees are identical, and even the same tree changes from day to day. But if we look more deeply, we can see that a single tree reflects the interconnectedness of all existence. The sun is in the tree, because without sunlight it could not live. The rain is in the tree, nourishing its roots, branches, and leaves. Even the carbon dioxide released from our cars becomes part of the tree as it absorbs and transforms it. In this sense, the whole of creation exists within the tree itself.

Practice Mindfulness to See with Fresh Awareness

Take a deep breath and look around you. Sometimes we need to make major life changes. Other times, we simply need to stop and reignite a healthy humility and wonder at life and embrace the present in a new and fresh way. We use language to communicate, but it also pigeonholes reality. Practice mindfulness to see past mental concepts to what is really before you, now, and the joy that is present in what you already have. The cosmos, almost totally uncharted, is above you and nothing is exactly as it seems. Read more about the art of mindfulness & our spiritual retreats
