The Hidden Challenges Men Face
Men have very few spaces where they can be authentic. Society often judges male worthiness based on output. In fact, most men judge themselves very harshly. At SpiritQuest we hear over and over how lonely many men feel. We have this perfect storm of personal harshness, no escape from the endless expectations of society and self, and no deep connections or outlets for expression.
While digital society has made life worse for everyone in terms of isolation, men suffer additionally due to the social pressures to conform to sometimes inhumane standards, standards that don’t come from within, standards that can feel oppressive. This cycle of judging oneself by external standards, comparing oneself to others, working obsessively to be worthy, then burning out, exploding, or releasing emotions in unhealthy ways (and then avoiding closeness out of fear) is a pattern we have seen many times.
What does Men’s Wellness look like?
If this pattern is a cycle of misery, what would men’s wellness look like? Well, first we always start with, get ready to have your mind blown, every man is an individual. What one man needs, another does not. This sounds like a ridiculously obvious statement, but men often punish themselves to fit a mold that they internalized as “manly.” We ask you to drop that for a minute (don’t worry, you can always pick it up again). Wellness for you is stepping into your authentic self with courage and resolve. What that looks like is up to you!
Case Examples:
We had a man recently whose dream was to be an actor. His father forbade him from acting. It was not “manly,” not a steady job, not something he could reliably provide for his family. His father was a good man and had good intentions. But ultimately, he had stifled his son’s growth. This man’s inner child felt suffocated, stifled, and judged.
Another man had faced unimaginable bullying in school. He conformed to survive, and the habit persisted into adulthood. He worked out, joined the Marines, and kept everyone at a distance. He was high-functioning, super fit, ultra-optimized. He made a lot of money, but from the inside, he was falling apart and had no one. Therapy didn’t work because he felt so defensive. He had rage toward women for not loving him, but he knew deep inside that HE was the one pushing everyone away. The pattern was to push, blame, rage, push. The healing power of touch, massage, and somatic release was very transformative for this individual. He’d held the pain of being punched and bullied by other boys as a child all these years.
The path to wellness for these two men looked different. One needed to be okay with disappointing his father and individuating into his own identity. The other needed to heal deep inner wounds and reconnect with his body. His nervous system needed to remember what ease even was.
Men’s wellness is thus a deeply individual state of being that integrates mind, body, emotions, and spirit. Now, many men get question marks in their eyes when we hit “spirit.” What we mean is simply “purpose”. When your life has a deeper purpose, it is amazing how much resolve you can find to keep going on a new, better path.
The 4 Pillars of Men’s Purpose & Well-being
Inner healing & Authenticity
You can’t skip this step, sorry guys. You gotta get vulnerable. Everyone is different; some need a lot more inner healing, others just need to look at themselves and their life with unflinching honesty.
Women have it tough. But what society often doesn’t recognize is the degree to which men are pigeonholed. There is this rigid, narrow path for men, and any stumble off it often triggers intense backlash, and there is often less support available for men.
Men need a place to dream, heal, release emotions, and be supported and heard. Have you made space to hear yourself? Most men are surprised to learn they can actually be their own healer, their own leader. Healing is taking back your power. So we don’t end at vulnerability; that is just the beginning. We end with strength.
Mental Clarity & Direction
Close your eyes now. What if you could leave behind everything for a moment and do or be anything? Let go of every expectation, every silly and oppressive expectation, gone. What then? Men are often so mired in social pressures, and this is made significantly worse by social media. At one point, men had community, family, church, work, and shoulder-to-shoulder connection with other men as pillars of support. These pillars are being eroded, and what has taken their place is pretty grim: a non-stop barrage of nonsensical standards and rage bait.
We are all marinated in it. Making it even tougher for men, society has changed. Women are now competitors in the workplace. This is pushing men out because now they have even more competition. That is great for women, but men are facing confusion and crisis.
We hope men can see that this crisis is momentary. There is an opportunity for men here to seize their authentic selves that may have been inaccessible just a decade ago. While we recognize the stress and confusion men face due to widespread change, we encourage men to see the benefits for them in a society where they can forge new paths that may not have been available to their fathers or grandfathers.
You get to be your own man. You get to decide. Our goal is to help you lean on your strengths, regain a positive outlook, and be someone with purpose and resolve.
Vitality
Vitality has many meanings, and we mean it holistically. Your mind can’t be sharp if you aren’t taking care of your body. Your body can’t be healthy if you don’t respect yourself enough to eat and sleep well. Your motivation can flag if you have conflicting emotional baggage. These suppressed emotions can isolate you and further reduce your motivation. Low motivation is linked with a lack of clarity. And now we are back to the mind, being dull. It is a depressing cycle.
No area of your life can be ignored or bypassed. Vitality is a natural gift by virtue of being alive. Think about the unlucky seed that sprouted in a rock: it still sprouts. Life is tenacious; it wants to live, it wants to thrive against all odds. If we don’t feel this zest within, something needs to be addressed. Once blockages are cleared, you can feel your birthright: vital, alive, energetic.
Mindfulness & Elevated Awareness
“The unexamined life is not worth living:” Socrates, getting it right since 399 BC.
Mindfulness is a powerful force because it cuts through all the falsehoods. If you can train your conscious awareness to stay a step removed, in a healthy way, your problems will be minimized. With practice, problems that once disturbed you can look almost silly. This is how you keep perspective, and it takes skill and practice. This is a kind of discipline where you refuse to go “back to sleep.” You have bravely started healing, you have chosen the life you want, you have worked on yourself, and now you will live that new life each day.
How do you know you are in need of a life overhaul or a tune-up?
Signs You May Be Disconnected From Your Purpose, Vitality, and Inner Power
Disconnection rarely announces itself. It tends to show up sideways, in things that seem unrelated to “purpose” until you look closer:
- Feeling successful on paper but empty in practice
- Irritability or numbness that shows up more than it used to
- Feeling disconnected from your spouse, partner, or kids, even when you’re physically present
- A quiet, persistent sense of “is this it?”
- Trying to fill the gap with more, more work, more spending, more distraction, and finding it doesn’t land
- Avoiding stillness because it brings up things you’d rather not feel
If several of these sound familiar to you, you must pay attention. These symptoms are unlikely to just “go away” if you “power through.” Men can be graceful, too: Find that inner grace, sensitivity, and focus, and bring it outward.
Anima/Animus & Yin/Yang: What Jung Thought, and what my Shiatsu Teacher Said
Anima and Animus
While psychoanalytic theory has gone out of fashion, it is worth mentioning the ideas of the great thinker Carl Jung. Jung believed that most men suppress their “anima,” or the unconscious feminine archetype. Due to societal conditioning and biological reality, men usually bury this inner force.
The anima is a bridge to the unconscious; it acts as a mediator between a man’s ego and his deep unconscious mind (often manifesting as weird dreams). This anima governs a man’s capacity for deep relationships, intuition, emotional depth, sensitivity, and artistic creativity.
Jung thought that cultivating a relationship with the anima allows a man to balance his external masculine identity and roles with authenticity and emotional maturity. Reaching out to the anima and integrating it can be a way for men to step out of the empty box of masculinity and reclaim it as fundamentally theirs. This is reaching full maturity as a human.
Yin/Yang
On a similar note, I had a very interesting Shiatsu teacher who taught a related theory from Eastern philosophy. He had given his life to the study of Chinese medicine, and he once told me, “Men are yang on the outside, but yin on the inside.” (And the reverse is true for women.)
Is there some truth here? Are men, with their tall, muscular, strong bodies, often engaged in fiery action,, harboring deep inner sensitivity, a yearning for what is calm and nurturing, a desire for structure, an outlet for creativity, and a place to rest?
We aren’t here to tell you the answers. Maybe none of this resonates, and that’s ok. We do things a little differently at SpiritQuest, because you are the guide & teacher. We are just witnesses to your transformation.
We do it differently: The SpiritQuest Method
At SpiritQuest, we’re not therapists: we’re coaches. The difference matters: coaching gives you tools, perspective, and a structured path forward, using the setting itself, Sedona’s land, silence, and vast horizon, as part of the process. Removing yourself from the energy drain of daily life, even briefly, creates the space needed to actually hear what’s underneath it.
We offer this in two forms:
Private Men’s Retreats — a fully customized, one-on-one experience built around your specific situation, whether that’s a career transition, a relationship strain, or simply the sense that something needs to shift. Other issues we helped men overcome include loss and grief, empty-nest syndrome, and somatic release (the release of long-held tension in the body).
Men’s Group Retreats — for men who want the camaraderie and shared perspective of doing this work alongside others who understand it firsthand.
If you want to go deeper into a specific part of this journey, we’ve written more about the struggle men face in staying silent, rebuilding self-esteem, and the broader value of a healing retreat.
Frequently Asked Questions
What is a men’s retreat, exactly?
A guided experience, private or group, designed to help men reconnect with mental clarity, emotional resilience, physical vitality, authenticity, and a sense of purpose, typically through a combination of coaching, nature-based practice, and reflective work.
How is a men’s retreat different from therapy?
Retreat coaching isn’t a substitute for therapy or clinical mental health treatment. Coaching focuses on tools, perspective, and forward movement; therapy addresses diagnosis and treatment of mental health conditions. Many men benefit from both, and if you’re navigating a mental health crisis, a licensed therapist or the 988 Suicide & Crisis Lifeline is the right first call.
Do I need to be in crisis to benefit from this kind of work?
No. Most of the men we work with aren’t in crisis; they’re feeling the slow disconnection described above and want to address it before it becomes one.
What if I don’t know what my “purpose” even is?
That’s a completely normal starting point, not a barrier. Clarity tends to come from the process itself, through stillness, honest reflection, and guided support, not from having the answer before you begin.
