Do you ever feel stuck in your head and like you’ve lost your footing? SpiritQuest utilizes the concept of “grounding” to help clients move out of the egoic mind and into a place of wholeness.
Furthermore, the practice of Earthing is deeply rooted in ancient wisdom from across the globe. From the Navajo and Apache tribes – who looked to the natural world for spiritual harmony – to the foundational traditions of Chinese Medicine and Ayurveda, the Earth has long been recognized as a source of restoration and wellness. These cultures have documented for centuries what we now rediscover at SpiritQuest: that connecting with Mother Nature is essential for the human spirit. Ultimately, this ancient lineage is why your journey begins not in a classroom, but on the sacred land of Sedona and with the SpiritQuest Path to Transformation™.

The Sedona Connection
Sedona is the perfect environment for grounding and connecting with the Earth. In fact, interacting with the vortex energy of Sedona is why people travel to this remarkable destination:
This sensory immersion marks the beginning of your SpiritQuest journey. Our goal is to provide you with a visceral experience that activates every sense. Seeing the vast vistas, hearing the silence of the desert, and feeling the ancient pulse of the Earth pulls you fully into the present moment. you may experience benefits associated with spending time in nature, including reduced stress and greater emotional resilience. By engaging in this profound grounding process, you may experience benefits associated with spending time in nature, including reduced stress and greater emotional resilience.
When people ask me, what is “grounded presence,” it is a process of activities and steps that impact both the mind and body in order to reduce anxiety, excessive thoughts, stress, and inflammation in the body. Understanding how this process works and incorporating it into your daily activities can increase your overall wellbeing.
How Grounding Impacts Mental Health
Studies have shown that engaging with nature greatly reduces stress. From listening to bird song, to observing the fluttering of leaves, to viewing a sunset, nature is known to calm the nervous system. This “grounding process” is a powerful way to improve your mental health and lower cortisol levels.
According to research conducted by physicist Richard Taylor, Ph.D., the human visual system has evolved to process patterns found in nature through what he calls Fractal Fluency. His research suggests this physiological response may help move the body out of a fight-or-flight state and, in some studies, has been associated with cortisol reductions of up to 60%.
Fully being present and engaging the 5 senses is a powerful way to quiet the chatter of the “monkey mind” and bring yourself back into the body and into the present moment. I distinctly remember an exercise I did with two clients of mine, where Allen and his wife, Janet, sat out in a wooded area near a pond while I led them in a 10 minute deep engagement with their five senses. When the exercise was over, I asked Janet to share what she heard, saw, smelled, and felt. She noted the bird song, the sound of water trickling, the smell of the pine, and the sensation of the breeze on her skin. In turn, I shared my experience noting all the things I noticed. It was then that I noticed the tears in Allen’s eyes.
When I asked him why he was emotional, he told me that unlike the experience of his wife and myself, he did not hear, see, smell, or feel anything. I asked him what he had been doing during the exercise and he replied, “thinking.” Then he went on to explain that because he was always caught in his thoughts, he was missing precious time in his life and with his child.
Instead of being in the moment, with his son, doing things like building a sand castle, or constructing a fort, Allen was thinking of what he needed to do next, where he had to be, and scanning for problems that needed to be fixed.
It was truly a testament to the power of presence and how most of the jewels of life are found in the moment all around us. The mind left unchecked can steal those jewels from us in an instant.
Tools for Quieting the Mind
The next step was to provide him with tools to quiet his incessant thoughts. Through intentional deep breathing, I was able to connect him to a still place within. Yogis have known for centuries, the power of breath forms. Breath is known as Prana. It is essentially your lifeforce. Every inhalation and exhalation provides a link between the mind, the body, and the soul.
Deep slow breathing activates the vagus nerve which in turn lowers the heart rate. Pranayama literally means “expansion of life force energy.” It comes from two Sanskrit words: Prana, meaning vital energy, or the breath of life and Ayama which means expansion, or liberation.
The second tool we utilized was silent meditation. We sat cross-legged on cushions and tuned into those intentional breathing exercises. I explained that meditation was not a thing you do but a place where you go. With each inhale and exhale of the Ujjayi breath, we sank deeper into a void of spaciousness. As thoughts rolled in, we simply allowed them to float like clouds without engaging.
Upon checking in with him, Allen was beginning to understand that he was not to be ruled by his thoughts and that he had the power to venture to a place of freedom, presence and peace.
Physical Benefits of Grounded Presence
When we make direct skin contact with the earth for 20 minutes a day, free electrons are transferred from the earth into the body. According to an article published in the Journal of Inflammation Research and hosted by the National Library of Medicine , “Grounding reduces or even prevents the cardinal signs of inflammation following injury: redness, heat, swelling, pain, and loss of function.” The article summarizes with the following information, “Grounding appears to improve sleep, normalize the day–night cortisol rhythm, reduce pain, reduce stress, shift the autonomic nervous system from sympathetic toward parasympathetic activation, increase heart rate variability, speed wound healing, and reduce blood viscosity.”
While these are great physical benefits, the biggest positive factor is the effect of overall wellbeing due to our ability to be more present in our lives.
The Art of Presence

The essence of SpiritQuest’s grounded presence lies in its ability to quiet thoughts. This is the ruminating loop that keeps us trapped in the past or anxious about the future. When we lose our connection to the present moment, we miss the “jewels” of real-time experience, shifting our focus from what’s around us to what we are thinking about. This mental disconnect severs our sense of gratitude and belonging. In turn, leaving us to identify solely with our thoughts as they run wild with imagined scenarios. By returning to the now, we move beyond these mental loops and reclaim our ability to feel deeply connected, grateful, and truly alive.
Mindfulness is the practice of non-judgmental acceptance. It is a deep investigation of the present moment that draws from our physical sensations, mental states, and emotional feelings. At SpiritQuest, we believe the most powerful way to cultivate this state is to begin every journey out on the land. By being immersed in the vastness of the red rocks, it breaks the habit of dwelling on the past or worrying about the future. The environment acts as a natural disruptor of cognitive thought patterns.

How Grounded Presence Leads to Your Next Steps
While the land provides the initial “disruption” to your stress patterns, the real work begins when we apply this approach to the specific framework of your life. This is where the SpiritQuest Method™ comes in — a structured system for turning a temporary state of presence into a permanent way of being.
Some clients describe this part of the process in spiritual terms as tapping into the vortex energy of the land, or feeling their personal energy align with the earth’s. Others simply notice the physiological shift: a slower heart rate, a quieter mind, the same parasympathetic calm described earlier in this article. Whichever language fits you, the retreat curriculum is built to carry that state forward, moving you from reactive stress to conscious mastery through red rock yoga, sitting meditation, and walking meditations.
Beyond Relaxation: Interpersonal Mindfulness
We go beyond basic relaxation, teaching you the art of responding rather than reacting.
I think of a client, Marcus, who came to us convinced his marriage was falling apart because his wife “never listened.” Partway through a walking meditation, he stopped mid-sentence — he’d caught himself rehearsing his next point instead of hearing what she’d actually said, a habit he later realized he brought into every conversation at home. That single moment of noticing did more for him than any advice we could have given: he started pausing half a beat before responding, at home and at work. That’s interpersonal mindfulness in practice by recognizing your own patterns of reactivity in real time so you can meet people with clear intention instead of being distracted.
From Presence to Personal Mastery

The journey from a restless “monkey mind” to a state of grounded presence is more than a temporary escape. It’s the same shift you felt on the first afternoon, barefoot on red rock, breath slowing, mind quieting — just extended into the rest of your life. That’s the foundational piece of our Path to Transformation™: the grounding you feel in your body becomes the grounding you carry in your decisions, your relationships, and your sense of who you are. Your transformation is waiting. It’s time to find your footing and begin.
