A Guide To The Best Hikes In Sedona

Sedona offers some of the most beautiful hiking trails in the world, but the area also averages over 3,000 emergency calls for rescue every year.  Always carry food and water sufficient for the hike you are planning.  Click the links below to see a more detailed trail description and map.  Before starting any hike in the Coconino National Forest it's wise to check with the local district office for information on current trail conditions and closures.  Because of the extremely rugged terrain around Sedona, do not count on cell phone service being available should you get into trouble.

Boynton Canyon Trail #47 - Take 89A W to right on Dry Creek Road and follow the signs to Boynton Cyn. Parking lot and the trailhead just outside the entrance to the Enchantment Resort.  This hike is approximately 2.5 miles with an elevation gain of 200 ft.  Allow 2-3 hrs.

Doe Mountain Trail #60 - Take 89A west to right Dry Creek Road.  Go 3 miles to Boynton Canyon intersection, then left on FR 152C 1 mile to trailhead.  This hike is .7 miles to the top of the mesa, with an elevation gain of 400 ft.  Allow 2 hrs.

Fay Canyon Trail #53 - Take 89A W to right Dry Creek Road. Go 3 mi to Boynton Canyon intersection, then left 1/2 mi to Fay Canyon.  This hike is 1.1 miles with an elevation gain of 100 ft.  Allow about 1 hr.

Long Canyon Trail #122 - Take 89A W to right Dry Creek Road. Go 1.5 mi to Long Canyon Rd (FR 152D) and N (right) 0.5 miles to the Long Canyon trailhead on left.  This hike is 2.9 miles with an elevation gain of about 500 ft.  Allow 1-2 hrs.

Parsons Trail #144 - 89A W of Sedona to Cottonwood. Take turnoff to Tuzigoot National Monument. Turn N just across Verde River, then left on FR 131. Approx. 11 miles to the trailhead.  This hike is approximately 4 miles with an elevation gain of 100 ft.  Allow 5-6 hrs.

Secret Canyon Trail #121 - Take 89A W to right Dry Creek Road. 2 mi to FR 152. (Can be traveled by cars - not when wet.) Go 3 mi to two-track road on left. Sign at jct. of these two roads. Parking area is approx. 200 ft behind sign.  This hike is 4.2 miles with an elevation gain of 600 ft.  Allow 3-4 hrs.  The scenery gets better toward the end.

West Fork Oak Creek #108 - Trailhead between milepost 385 and 384, on W side of Hwy 89A in Oak Creek. Best place to park is Call O' The Canyon day area (fee) 1/4 mi N of trailhead.  This hike is approximately 3 miles with an elevation gain of 100 ft.  Allow 2 hours.  To backpack the full length of this canyon is about 28 miles and you will need a vehicle at each end.  The hike described here is at the lower end of the canyon.  Going farther up canyon requires wading or swimming in the creek.

Vultee Arch Trail #22 - Take 89A W to right Dry Creek Road. 2 mi to FR 152. (Can be traveled by cars, but not when wet.)  4.3 miles to parking at end of road. Go east along a short jeep trail which dead-ends at a drainage.  Continue on foot path up the canyon.  This hike is 1.7 miles with an elevation gain of 600 ft.  Allow 1-2 hrs.

Moderate Hikes In Sedona

Bell RockBrins Mesa #119 - Trail begins 1 mile north of Sedona off 89A.  Take Jordan Road from N end of town to trailhead.  This hike is approximately 3 miles in length with an elevation gain of 250 ft.

Cookstove Trail #143 - Trailhead near milepost 387 at north end of Pine Flat Campground in Oak Creek Canyon. Across from roadside water stop.  This hike is only .7 miles but with an elevation gain of 1000 ft. it is very steep.  Allow 2 hrs.

Soldiers Pass Trail #66 - Take 89A West from center of Sedona 1.2 miles to right on Soldiers Pass Rd.  Go 1.5 miles to Rim Shadows Dr, then 0.2 miles to a gated entry road with trailhead parking on left.  Trail is open 8 am to 6 pm.  The hike to Soldiers Pass is approximately 4.8 miles round-trip, with an elevation gain of 450 ft.  Allow 3 hours.

Thomas Point Trail #142 - Trailhead between milepost 385 and 384, on E side of Hwy 89A in Oak Creek Canyon. Best place to park is Call O' The Canyon day area (fee) 3/4 mile north of trailhead.  This hike is 1 mile in length with an elevation change of 1100 ft.  Allow 2-3 hrs.

Difficult Hikes In Sedona

Bear Mountain #54 - Take 89A W to right Dry Creek Road. Go 2.9 miles to left on Boynton Pass Road. Go 1.6 miles and turn left on FR 152C, Go 1.2 miles to the trailhead parking on the right.  This hike is 2.5 miles with an elevation gain of 1800 ft.  Allow 2-3 hrs.

Casner Canyon Trail #11 - Park on W side of 89A 2 mi N of Sedona.  This hike is 2 miles in length with an elevation gain of 1800 ft.  Allow 2-3 hrs.

Dogie Trail #116 - 5 mi W of  Sedona on 89A turn N on FR 525 and follow the signs to Sycamore Pass. Turn W on FR 525C and continue for nine miles to the parking area. Hike road up to the saddle.  This trail is 5.4 miles with an elevation gain of 1000 ft.  Allow a full day or camp overnight.

Harding Springs #51 - Trailhead near Cave Springs Campground at about milepost 385.5 in Oak Creek Canyon - on the east side of the highway. Take the trail that leads uphill!  This steep hike is .7 miles with an elevation gain of 1100 ft.  Allow 2 hrs.

Hot Loop Trail #94 - Go 9.3 mi south of Sedona on Hwy 179 to where a dirt road turns left through closed gate. Follow this primitive road to dirt parking area. Woods Canyon Trail heads up canyon.  The Hot Loop Trail branches off about 1 mile up Woods Canyon.  To hike the full length of this trail is 20.4 miles roundtrip  and would require 2-3 days.  Most people can hike to the overlook in about 4 hrs.  The elevation gain is 1000 ft.

Jacks Canyon Trail #55 - 7.3 mi S of Sedona on Hwy 173 to left on Jacks Cyn Road (FR 793). 3 miles to the trailhead.  This hike is approximately 5.7 miles with an elevation gain of 1100 ft.  Allow 4-5 hrs.

Loy Canyon Trail #5 - 5 mi W of Sedona on Hwy 89A turn N on FR 525, follow signs toward Loy Butte 9.3 miles to trailhead. Parking area on left just before crossing cattleguard into Hancock Ranch.  This hike is 5 miles in length with an elevation gain of 1500 ft.  Allow a full day.

Mooney Trail #12 - 5 mi W of Sedona on Hwy 89A turn N on FR 525, follow signs to Sycamore Pass. Turn W on FR 525C and continue 5 mi to trailhead. Watch for trailhead sign on right along FR 9551 next to Black Tank.  This hike is over a rugged trail of 4.2 miles with an elevation gain of 500 ft. Allow 4-6 hrs.

Wilson Mountain Trail #10 and North Wilson Trail #123 - Parking area 2 mi N of Sedona on U. S. 89A, just north of Midgely Bridge.  This hike is 5.6 miles with an elevation gain of 2,300 ft.  Allow a full day.
